Mechanics for Amazing Race in Claret

The students will be tested on their collaborative skills, patience, stamina, language skills, human relations, entrepreneurship among others. A school will be partnered with another school to form a single team. A team of eight students from the two schools will unite to overcome various challenges that will involve physical endurance, mental challenges, as well as show their expertise in  video editing, graphics layout, marketing skills  and  oral  presentation.

Their objective:  To come up with an information campaign about  “Global Warming”

There will be several physical races before they will be given a task like running, jumping among others. The contestants should wear sports attire and rubber shoes. Please bring extra clothes for the video production.

First Task: Make a 2 minute on the spot video production on “Global Warming” using only themselves as talents  and upload it in You Tube. They have 1 1/2 hours to make the 2 minute video.

Scoring:

1st team to finish the race   10 points       +    2 minute video 10 points     20 points

2nd  team to finish the race    9 points   +    2 minute video 10 points     19 points

3rd team to finish the race     8 points    +    2 minute video 10 points    18 points

So on and so forth.

Second Task: Develop products made from recycled materials that they themselves will have to sell during lunch time to students of Claret as a means of raising funds for their “Environmental Campaign”. Each member of the team will have to invest P50.00 each. The amount of total sales will be the points earned for the team. They have 1 ½ hours to come up with products to sell. They can already buy the materials before going to Claret but they have to show receipts/records on how much did they spend on the materials.

Third Task: Make a booth showcasing posters, brochures and a three minute presentation on how students should be able to help in the Global Warming awareness campaign.  They can use the high school laboratory printer to print their posters. They will be given 1 ½ hours to design their booths.

Judges will be invited to choose the most attractive booth, video and best oral presentation. (A divider will be provided to hang the posters and sample of the products that they will sell during lunch time.

The race officials will get the total scores of the three events plus walk in audience will be given three stickers to stick on the top three booths that they like. Each sticker is worth 1 point. The sticker points will be added to their total scores. Medals will be given to the top three teams.

The participating teams will have to bring all the materials that they will need such as video camera, laptop computers, paper, scissors, glue, decors, props etc.

What is a Rube Goldberg machine?

Rube Goldberg. Goldberg was the creator of those insanely crazy machines designed to perform mundane tasks.

You will find a lot of examples in YouTube.

Machine Specifications

  • The machines must be assembled on the day of the contest itself. Only the motors may be brought in already assembled.*·
  •  The machine must complete the task as described by the contestants.
  •  The machine must be no larger than 6 ft x 6 ft x 6 ft. ·      The machine must have a minimum of 10  steps* and 30 maximum steps.
  • The machine must run for no more than two (2) minutes.
  • Teams will have two (2) minutes before the first run to explain their machine.
  • The team will only have one chance to run the machine for the official judging.
  • No live animals may be used in the machine.
  • The machine must not imply profane, indecent or lewd expressions.
  •  Any loose or flying objects must remain within the set boundaries of the machine. This
includes, but is not limited to, drops of water, slivers of balloon, and other “small”
objects. Steam and other gasses are exempt from this rule.
  • The machine may utilize up to  three (3) motors,  one (1) air compressor hose and one (1) power cord. No other cords may be run to or from the machine; however there is no limit to the number of hoses and cords utilized within the space of the machine.
  • No flames may be used on or within the machine. Electrical arching may be used upon approval of the contest Chairman.
  • No hazardous materials or explosives can be used on or within the machine.
  • The machine must be safe to the satisfaction of the officials. The contest
Chairman must approve any questionable items prior to competition.

Definition of a step:

A step is defined as an action that results in another action towards the final goal of the machine. A step is a linear process, not a parallel process. If a plane, for example, moves up a wire and triggers a switch that would be an example of one complete step. If the plane causes two things to happen, that would be a parallel result and would only count as one complete step. Another example is the act of tipping over a block of wood with a rolling ball is a step. The actual tipping motion of the block is NOT a step, unless it causes another action to occur.

Materials:You may only use recycled materials  such as: cardboard, used plastic, old toys, metal , junk parts and the likes. Only unassembled parts will be allowed to be used (These refers only to items that your team pre-assembled with the intention of using it as an integral part of your machine).   A buddy system between  schools will be implemented to check whether the team will comply with the requirements. 50 points will be deducted from the total score of the team that will not disassemble the parts being questioned.Participants:
  • Each school will have to field 3 high school students in any year level to form a team.
  • The teacher/coach may only act as an observer during the actual event. He/she may not give any instructions to the students at any time during the construction of the machine.
  • Each school may only enter two machines. (You can have two teams of three students each.)
  • Each school must bring all the materials that they need including extension cords if needed.
 Judging Criteria:

There will be a total of 3 judges for each machine. The team with the most number of points would win the contest.

Major Criteria:

Creativity                                                                                                          40

Includes design and incorporation of recyclable materials

Originality/uniqueness

Variety of concepts (more steps, more  points)                                                  30

(each step is worth 1 point with a maximum of 30 points)

Task completion/Continuity of the entire run                                                      30

                                                                        Total:                                      100 points

Water, water everywhere! But where are the flags?

Part II

CREATE A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION OF THE EXPERIENCES THAT YOU ENCOUNTERED WITH YOUR NEW TEAM MATES.

This is the most crucial part of the event it is time to show your powerpoint prowess and showcase it to us.
If you want to be criticized by Mr.Cordero again just like what he did in the Movie Making which he criticized like Simon from American Idol. Then do not do your best. If some of his remarks have offended any of you, we apologize for the comments that he has made. It was nothing personal and he didn't mean any harm.

But I tell you this time Mr.Cordero didn't criticized like Simon Cowell again. This time Mr.Cordero became a more gentle man. I can tell that there are many students here that had great ability in Power Point.

Thank you to all the wonderful participants

October 7, 2006

We would like to  congratulate all the winners in the different events and thank each and everyone of you who participated in this meaningful event. Especially to all the coaches. We have been doing this event for the past 10 years but so far, this has been the most enjoyable one.  We are still collating  the list of winners . As you can see we still have to gather all the names of the winners. Our manpower is not enough. We wish to thank also the people behind the contest, especially the technicians who labored until 12 midnight  and to  Marc Obaldo who did an amazing job with his trivia Quiz program, special thanks also to Kevin Santos who just came in from a Robotics competition and still decided to stay until 12 midnight to help us in the AVR, to Lance Cordoba and his  Powerpoint team of organizers, tagatak ang pawis pero sige lang ng sige, fully charge lagi,  saludo ako sa inyo, dami nyong naitulong at patuloy pang tinutulong. Enjoy talaga ang Powerpoint competition. Wait nyo na lang pag nagawa na namin maupload ang mga photos and videos.  We hope that we can  have more responsible student volunteers next year.. It's a tough job and there's no pay, its just the spirit of friendship and volunteerism that empower them. We hope that more schools will also get involved, especially in the financial and technical aspects. We want everyone to be involved, it's not just our success or failure it's the concern of everybody if we still want to continue with it.

We also wish to apoligize for the inconvenience that we may have brought to some students and coaches. Tao lang po, nagkakamali din. . Magtulungan na lang po tayo sa mga susunod pang mga contests para na rin po sa kasiyahan ng mga estudiante. After all that's our main objective: to let our students have fun with other students from other schools.

Nananawagan kami sa lahat ng mga participants na kumuha ng mga pictures. Please send it to us or give us the links to the site where you have uploaded it. We will post it here. Yong mga sumali sa HTML please upload all your work and send us the links.

Once again congratulations to everyone,  everybody deserves a round of applause.

Good luck participants!

Hi to all participants!

Tomorrow is the big day, good luck to everyone. Although it's a contest, we all want you to have fun and meet new friends. So it really doesn't matter if you win or lose as long as you try to do your best and be a good sport.

All Powerpoint and Web page design participants make sure you wear your P.E. uniforms and rubber shoes or any comfortable clothes. Expect  the unexpected and be ready to get wet and dirty. Bring extra clothes with you.  The Powerpoint contest is the most challenging event; it's not for the faint of heart!

Good luck!

2 more days before the big event!

September 26, 2006

As of today 10 schools have confirmed their participation!  Were still waiting for some of the schools to submit their final list of contestants. This looks like its going to be an exciting match. The events to look forward to are the Powerpoint and web page design contests. The most interesting part would be the Dota match. Let's see how the girls will develop their strategy in playing a male dominated game of Dota.
